San Antonio, TX – Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM)—the largest private funding source for healthcare services to the uninsured and under-served in South Texas and half owner of the Methodist Healthcare System, is proud to announce the Board of Directors has elected Mr. Scott Bryan to serve as Chair.

Bryan has served on the MHM Board of Directors since 2003, however, he and his family have a long and rich history of service to the organization, beginning with his father, the late Richard “Dick” Bryan who also served as Chair during his service to MHM.

“We are extremely proud to welcome Scott as Chair. I was privileged to serve under Dick Bryan’s leadership, and the example he set for us,” reflects Kevin C. Moriarty, MHM president and chief executive officer. “Like his father, Scott has demonstrated extraordinary leadership. From his role as Treasurer to Senior Vice Chair on the Board, Scott has helped to shape MHM into the organization we are today. Scott’s leadership will be invaluable as we navigate the challenges Texas is sure to face as it struggles to adapt to federal healthcare reform initiatives.”

In addition to serving as Chair, Mr. Bryan serves as an account representative at HOLT CAT San Antonio and is an active member at the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church.

Mr. Bryan thanked Richard “Dick” Gilby for his leadership as the out-going chairman of the board as he accepted the ceremonial gavel during the annual board of directors meeting which took place June 27. “Dick Gilby led this Board and MHM to unprecedented heights. The strength and vitality of this organization is in large part, a product of Dick’s leadership. I am extremely grateful to him and all the members of this board for their service to MHM. I am humbled to assume a position I know my father was proud to fulfill.”

The MHM board of directors also elected new board officers at the June meeting: Darrell Frank Smith elected as senior vice chair; Paula Larson, M.D. of South Texas Pathology Associates elected as vice chair; George Ricks of DOCUmation, Inc. elected as vice chair; Shirley S. Watkins, community volunteer elected as secretary; and Alice H. Gannon of USAA elected as treasurer.

On Ruling(s) by the Supreme Court….

On Ruling(s) by the Supreme Court of the United States on Individual Mandate and Medicaid Expansion in the Affordable Care Act of 2012

San Antonio, TX – For many Texans, passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was a step toward
ensuring care for those who are sick, promoting prevention, and holding insurers accountable. In no state does today’s decision have a bigger impact than right here in Texas. Since ACA passed, over 7.5 million have benefited through dependent coverage (if under 26 years of age), and access of a federal insurance pool for pre-existing conditions.

Today’s ruling is cause for celebration—and for action. It is time for Texas leaders to get to work on implementing the law so that more Texans benefit. One important step is to establish an exchange that will allow many of the 6 million currently uninsured Texans and hundreds of Texas small businesses to access health care coverage at prices they can afford. Of the uninsured, 2/3 want insurance but have difficulty attaining it due to cost, or pre-existing conditions.

Texas should make it a priority to set up a health insurance exchange that is made especially for Texas. Texas needs to negotiate with the industry for affordable health insurance products. This allows Texas not only to be the #1 job creator, but the #1 contributor to the overall national economy.

Texas needs to make it a priority to set up a health insurance exchange that is made especially for Texas. Let’s make a Texas exchange for Texans!

The ruling today brings peace of mind for millions of Texans: children with pre-existing health conditions who get to keep the health care they need; young adults who can stay on their parents’ health plans; small businesses that receive tax credits for covering their employees; and millions of other Texans who benefit from the law’s free preventive care without co-pays and lowered drug costs in Medicare.

The expansion and exchange subsidies will be financed overwhelmingly by the federal government. For five years, starting in 2014, these initiatives will bring an estimated $119 billion in new federal dollars with a $6 billion state match for Medicaid expansion.

Kevin C. Moriarty, CEO of Methodist Healthcare Ministries stated: “We are committed to the least served, and look forward to the partnership with the state to address health care in Texas. The future of Texas depends on a healthy workforce, and the federal funds for a Medicaid expansion are a good economic tool.”

ThriveWell: Deriving Inspiration & Vitality through Activity

Since inception, MHM has provided nearly $500 million in healthcare services through our clinics and programs, as well as through our partnerships. MHM is proud to partner with organizations that share our mission and organizational objective of delivering healthcare and social services to the least served in the South Texas region. By strengthening other organizations' capacity to provide services, we
achieve our overarching goal of increasing access to care.

Under the umbrella of Health Education & Nutrition, the ThriveWell Cancer Foundation became an MHM funded partner in 2011 when MHM funded ThriveWell’s Deriving Inspiration & Vitality through Activity (DIVA) program. ThriveWell is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer by funding cancer research, providing patient support and offering programs, like DIVA, to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. DIVA was developed in response to research that showed that breast cancer patients who follow diet and exercise guidelines can reduce their risk of reoccurrence by 30-40 percent.

DIVA provides free exercise, nutrition and artful healing classes for breast cancer patients and survivors. Research shows that women who exercise 1-3 hours per week, following recommended hormonal or chemotherapy, have a 25 percent lower mortality from breast cancer and those who exercise 3-8 hours per week have a reduction in breast cancer mortality of 50 percent!

Through education, DIVA teaches the survival benefits of nutrition and exercise, while also creating a sisterhood of thriving survivors. There are four DIVA class locations in Bexar County. MHM provides funding to support two service sites that are located in underserved low-income areas of San Antonio where women have a high incidence of late stage breast cancer. By providing access in these locations, health disparities among minority cancer patients are reduced. Since ThriveWell’s induction as a funded partner in 2011, MHM has provided over $80,000 in funding to support the DIVA program.

Pink Party for Women’s Health: A Community Effort

The Wesley Nurse Health Ministries™ program is committed to serving the least served through education, health promotion, and collaboration.

Vicki Krcha, Wesley Nurse in Llano, embraced the role of collaborator as she joined the community task force aimed at producing Llano’s recent Pink Party for Women’s Health held on May, 15, 2012 at the Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Llano. Additional members of this self-convened task force included Scott & White Healthcare – Llano, the Family and Consumer Sciences Division of the Texas ArgiLife Extension Service, and Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.

As part of the event planning process, Vicki worked to secure the venue, recruit volunteers for the event, conduct outreach and marketing, and eventually served  as table leader for the discussion portion of the event.

Table discussion 1

2012 Llano Refreshments 009
The Pink Party for Women’s Health provided a soapbox for women to learn more about health issues with a specific focus on breast and cervical cancer. Further, facilitators used this as an opportunity to make local resources available to attendees as area medical providers were on hand to address concerns.

The importance of early detection was a focal point of the evening, along with financial assistance opportunities available to residents.

Overall, approximately 25 women attended the Pink Party for Women’s Health. The feedback was resoundingly positive. Attendees expressed appreciation for the information presented and opportunity to voice health questions and concerns. In fact, four women without health insurance were connected to resources in Llano to provide assistance.

Meld: An MHM Parenting Program

Having a child changes everything doesn’t it? It changes your body and lifestyle, and it can change how you view the world. If you’re a young mom or dad, it can change your future. For a grandmother raising a grandchild, it can plunge you back into a role you had not anticipated reviving. And, if you’re a parent to a special needs child it changes everything.

But for all those changes, there is comfort in knowing there is a place that can help to guide you through it—that’s Meld.

Meld is a two-year program offered by the Parenting Programs of Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM). It brings together groups of parents who have similar parenting needs, and offers them a curriculum and tools that will help them to become more confident leaders within their own families.

Upon completion of the two-year curriculum, participants will have developed practical parenting techniques and gained the support to help them pursue the goals they set for their families. As families prepare to transition beyond the Meld program, their parenting coordinator will work with them to identify areas where they need ongoing support, and will ensure that they get connected to the resources that they need in the community. Parents may find that there are other programs and services offered by MHM that may provide the additional support they need; they may also be introduced to new resources in the community. Whatever the case, the Meld staff will work with each family to ensure that they are aware of resources and opportunities beyond the scope of what the Meld program offers, and to assist them with getting connected, as needed.

There are four Meld programs, each geared towards the particular needs of the parents within the group. There is a Meld for Young Moms group for young mothers ages 13 to 25; a Meld for Young Dads group; Meld for Growing Families for mothers ages 26 and older, and for grandparents raising grandchildren; and a Meld Special group, designed specifically for parents raising children living with a wide range of illnesses and disabilities.

There are no income requirements to participate in any of the groups, and enrollment is simple. A light meal or snack is provided at each group meeting, and volunteers provide free childcare during each session. Active participants in the program are also eligible to participate in a free annual field trip.

We invite you to learn about Meld, and all the Parenting Programs MHM offers by visiting www.mhm.org or contacting us at info@mhm.org.

El Milagro Clinic: Providing Rio Grande Valley residents with a Medical Home

Since inception, MHM has provided nearly $500 million in healthcare services through our clinics and programs, as well as through our partnerships. MHM is proud to partner with organizations that share our mission and organizational objective of delivering healthcare and social services to the least served in the South Texas region. By strengthening other organizations' capacity to provide services, we achieve our overarching goal of increasing access to care.

With a dedication to providing health-related human services to the underserved, MHM welcomed El Milagro Clinic as a funded partner in 2002 in an effort to address the concern for access to care among the uninsured and underinsured population. Located in McAllen, Texas, El Milagro provides Rio Grande Valley residents with comprehensive medical services, with a focus on education and preventative measures. El Milagro’s service area is one of severe poverty and high unemployment with incomes at or below the Federal Poverty Level. The typical patient at El Milagro is monolingual Spanish speaking further complicating the ability to receive quality healthcare services. The demand for access to affordable healthcare services in this area is of crucial importance.

Due to limited access to care, many clients do not have an established physician or thorough medical records. As a result, clients seek treatment to routine illness by way of expensive emergency room visits or by jumping from doctor to doctor for fear of inability to pay balances from previous visits. Consequently, continuity of care and case management is difficult. Conscious of the detriment of this trend, El Milagro works to establish the clinic as a “medical home” for patients to access primary care and address preventive measures. Licensed physicians and personnel see approximately 75 patients a day for routine primary care with additional services spanning from screenings and education to onsite ancillary services such as laboratory testing, and prescription assistance. This all-in-one model has proven powerful as patients express anxiety over being referred out to other health providers in the community to complete their medical needs — especially given the rising cost of gas.

El Milagro offers onsite comprehensive primary health care and mental health counseling along with health education. El Milagro’s professional team embodies a holistic approach to health and wellness where the patient is viewed as an integral part of the team of caregivers. El Milagro’s combined Wellness Center offers exercise and nutrition classes, and programs like music therapy, journaling and creative writing – as illustrated in 'Vidas Cruzadas,' a collection of poetry and essays by women impacted by the program — which compliments the Center's mental health services.

The impact of these services is best depicted by the powerful testimonials of the program's participants — people like Maria Martinez. "This program helps us a lot. We learned to know ourselves more. I began to dig into my mind and remember things that I had forgotten. They show us pictures and [I] learned that everyone sees things differently…our minds are so powerful that we hardly stop and meditate.”

MHM has provided funding to assist El Milagro with the delivery of primary care services and the continuation of their Wellness Center in excess of $2.8 million providing for about 77,000 encounters from 2008-2011, with an anticipated 24,000 more in 2012.
