Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc. owns and operates two primary care clinics at two locations – Wesley Health & Wellness Center and Dixon Health & Wellness Center – in San Antonio, in addition to two School Based Health Center locations in Guadalupe County. The clinics address the medical and dental needs of people who cannot afford health insurance. Services are provided on a sliding fee scale based upon ability to pay, household income and family size.

Before there was Wesley Health & Wellness Center, there was the Wesley Community Center and Wesley Primary Care Clinic. In 1909, three Methodist missions came together to serve the citizens of San Antonio’s South Side by forming the Wesley Community Center. Located on the same property, the Wesley Primary Care Clinic provided health care services to residents of the Columbia Heights neighborhood. In 1997, Methodist Healthcare Ministries assumed ownership of the facility renaming it “Wesley Health & Wellness Center” to be inclusive to a full range of services dedicated to treating the mind, body and spirit. With continued expansion and renovation, Wesley Health & Wellness Center offers a state-of-the-art health facility to the community surrounding it. Wesley Health & Wellness Center remains to its core mission of ministering to those less fortunate.

Named after Bishop Ernest Thomas Dixon, Jr. – the first African-American elected as Bishop by the eight-state South Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church – Dixon Health & Wellness Center is rooted in faith and service to all. The clinic’s namesake led a life of exemplary scholarship and service, graduating from Drew Theological Seminary to become ordained as a deacon at the Tuskegee Institute. Bishop Dixon grew up on the Eastside of San Antonio and graduated from Wheatley High School in 1939. He served eight years as an episcopal leader in Kansas and 12 years in San Antonio before he retired in 1992, where he subsequently made his home. Known as a leader in the community, Bishop Dixon served on many boards including Methodist Healthcare Ministries.

Dixon Health & Wellness Center was conceived in 1997 and for nearly 20 years the clinic operated at its 1954 E. Houston St. location on San Antonio’s Eastside. In 2017, Methodist Healthcare Ministries announced the relocation of the clinic to 4212 E. Southcross on San Antonio’s Southeast side, a 20-acre property just six-and-a-half miles from its former location. A testament to the legacy of Bishop Dixon, the clinic has become a reliable source for quality, compassionate care for the underserved in San Antonio.
