Methodist Healthcare Ministries was formed in 1995 out of the
joint venture partnership between Southwest Texas Methodist
Hospital and Columbia/HCA, the world’s largest healthcare
organization. It was formed to serve individuals and families
within the 72-county service area of the Southwest Conference of
the United Methodist Church who do not have access to health
care services nor medical insurance. At the same time it was
formed, Methodist Healthcare System was also created and today,
has more than 25 facilities serving the people of Bexar County
and surrounding areas.
In 1995, the year Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas
was created as a faith-based organization, it made 1,100
contacts with individuals in need of access to health and human
services. In its second year of existence, it became the largest
private funding source for community healthcare in San Antonio
and South Texas. At the end of its first decade, in 2005, that
number was more than 300,000 contacts. The total in its first
ten years: more than $110 million invested in services and
programs and more than 1.5 million individual contacts made.
