Methodist Healthcare Ministries is committed to addressing the
needs of the underserved. In addition to direct services, it is
critical to address change that comes legislatively. The
Research group helps define the reality behind the issues
quantitatively. It also works to assist MHM partner
organizations in seeking grants to facilitate funding to meet
objectives. The Planning group defines areas of need and future
growth to meet MHM’s mission. MHM’s Policy Department ensures
that MHM’s positions are known to legislative officials, and
that it works in association with like-minded organizations to
change policy to those that reflect the values of Methodist
Healthcare Ministries.
- Legislative Initiatives
With the needs of the underserved far greater than any one
entity can provide, Methodist Healthcare Ministries also
works with similarly-focused organizations and the state
government in developing more socially conscious public
policy. The goal: to change perspectives and policies so
that the root of the problems of the underserved are
addressed.
In ecember 2004, the Board of Directors approved the 2005
Methodist Healthcare Ministries Legislative Agenda. The
Legislative Agenda describes the public policy issues that
concern MHM and affect the people that we serve in our
clinics and other programs. MHM asked state legislators and
local elected officials to take action on the following
priority issues during the 2005 Legislative Session:
- Children’s Health – Improve access to health care
for children by restoring benefits and expanding
coverage available through the Children’s Health
Insurance program.
- Diabetes & Obesity – Raise awareness and allow for
early detection of diabetes and obesity, especially
through the schools.
- Community Clinics – Increase access to health
services at community clinics by expanding the number of
federally-qualified or other health clinics.
- Oral Health – Expand the capacity of dental care by
giving dentists incentives to work in underserved areas
and increasing Medicaid and CHIP payments for dental
work.
Other organizations that MHM has worked with include: Texas
Impact, United Farm Workers, Texas Baptist General Convention,
Conference of Catholic Bishops, United Methodist Women,
Industrial Areas Foundation, and the Texas Association of
Community Health Centers.
