The Community Programs of Methodist Healthcare Ministries focus on bringing together individuals of similar backgrounds, ages, or life situations and creating a community within a community.

Wesley at Columbia Heights
In 2004, Methodist Healthcare Ministries was asked to assume the management of the Wesley Health and Wellness Center, a mission of the Methodist Church since 1909. The services offered through the Wesley Health and Wellness Center have grown to meet the needs of the people in the South side community of San Antonio that it has always served. All ages are served, from infants who are enrolled in the onsite daycare run by the Daughters of Charity, and school-age children enrolled in after-school and summer camp programs, to youth and adults involved in sports leagues, and senior citizens in group activities. Social services offered include a food and clothing bank, emergency assistance, and counseling. In the fall of 2004, a quarterly virtual courthouse for legal matters was started in partnership with the San Antonio Bar Association. Additionally, the Wesley Health and Wellness Center offers both medical and dental care to individuals without insurance – often the working poor. All services are provided free or on a sliding scale based upon ability to pay.

In June of 2006, the board of MHM unanimously approved the purchase from the Women’s Auxiliary of the United Methodist Church, the Wesley Health and Wellness Center and its property. With this purchase, the name, Wesley at Columbia Heights, was adopted to better reflect the entity as a destination for social, emotional, physical, and spiritual support for the individuals of the Columbia Heights community. The name is intended to no longer separate the medical and dental services of the Primary Care Clinic from the programs of the Community Center. Other than the name, the only change with ownership was the launch of an assessment of additional services and programs needed. The Women's Auxiliary and Advisory Councils involvement in Wesley at Columbia Heights continues, as does the need for financial support from Methodist congregations, auxiliary groups, and individuals.

Parenting Programs
Methodist Healthcare Ministries understands that parenting is difficult for most. But for the families challenged by socioeconomic conditions, it is even harder. Therefore, it has taken a leadership role in providing practical support to help parents and guardians learn parenting skills so that they will be more confident and more competent. MELD (Mutual Enrichment through Learning & Discovery) and PHP (Parents Helping Parents), are both based on the premise of parents learning from other parents facing similar challenges. They are centered in the belief that there is no one “right” way to be a parent – but there are guidelines that can help. MELD is a two-year program that is based mainly in Bexar County; PHP is a shorter-term program that is offered in more rural areas throughout South Texas.

A comprehensive two-year program for adolescent mothers who are pregnant or have children from birth to age two.	Serves young fathers who face emotional, societal, financial, and interpersonal barriers to participating in their child’s life.	An extension of the Young Moms program, bringing together mother of children age three and older. It also addresses the needs of grandparents raising their grandchildren.	For parents with special needs children – those with developmental and physical disabilities.
