In October 2011, Methodist Healthcare Ministries established the Dr. Lewis Purnell Memorial Fund dedicated to supporting children's health care services in San Antonio and Bexar County. Dr. Purnell practiced pediatrics for nearly three decades in San Antonio. During that time, he served as chief of staff at Methodist Hospital, chairman of its medical board and chairman of the physicians' resource committee of Methodist Children's Hospital. On September 29, 2011, Dr. Purnell died of complications from bone cancer at the age of 54.
